Storage and Maintenance
¡¡
Why is maintenance important?
Two way radios are versatile and robust devices, and, when
looked after properly, will serve you well for years.
Even the most rugged piece of
equipment will deteriorate quickly if it isn¡¯t properly
looked after. Waterproof seals can perish, switches can
seize or fail, batteries can fail, and grime and dirt can
block speaker and microphone openings.
A few simple steps can greatly enhance the lifespan of your
radio and keep it working at its full potential throughout
its lifetime. Basic maintenance and care are all that is
needed, so you don¡¯t have to be comfortable with electronics
or be handy with a screwdriver. Just a little diligence and
some common sense are all!
¡¡
1. Inspect Regularly
How often you need to apply this care and attention is down
to many factors, some of the common ones are:
Type of usage ¨C If your two way radios are used regularly in
dirty, wet, or other harsh conditions, then it is best to
inspect them daily.
Frequency of use ¨C The more frequently the radios are used,
the more frequently they should be inspected.
Age ¨C Just like us humans, two way radios can get a bit
wobbly as they age if not treated properly! In particular,
look at the battery life in older two way radios and
consider changing them if necessary.
If the batteries are removable, then remove them and look
for signs of corrosion and leakage on the batteries and the
terminals of the radio. As well as the batteries, the
inspection should look for visible signs of damage, grime
and dirt build-up, and whether the switches still feel as
they should when operated.
2. Store properly
The correct storage is critical if you want to prolong the
life of your two way radio. Much of this common sense, don¡¯t
store where it is exposed to direct sunlight, or in extremes
of temperatures etc. But there is a good chance that your
radio will be spending a lot of its life in storage, so it
is a critical factor.
Cleaning ¨C Cleaning your two way radio before storage is
especially important if it is to be stored for a long
period. This stops moulds and fungus from growing and also
prevents dirt from hardening over time and potentially
damaging the radio. Even if your two way radio looks
completely clean, it is good practice to wipe them with a
dry or slightly damp cloth before storage.
Important ¨C Always check the our cleaning and
maintenance instructions first.
Batteries ¨C Another factor to be considered for long term
storage is the batteries. If they are removable, then do so
before you store them. Also, for rechargeable batteries, it
is best not to store them with a full charge. Fully charged
batteries are ¡°stressed,¡± and this can severely degrade
their useful life.
Dry ¨C Always ensure that your radios are completely dry
before storing them. This can prevent both water ingress and
can also prevent moulds from growing when in longer-term
storage.
3. Clean vents and grills regularly
Speaker and microphone grills, where present, should be
cleaned regularly to keep the clarity of sound crystal-clear
at both ends of the conversation.
Equally important are any ventilation vents on the radio.
Electronic circuitry runs warm, and these vents are
essential to dissipate that heat. Overheating is one of the
major killers of electronics and making sure these vents are
always clean will help keep both you and your radios
chilled.
The easiest way to do this is by using a little
antibacterial or specialized cleaner onto a microfibre cloth
or cotton bud and gently cleaning the grills. Once again, it
is essential to check the our instructions first
to make sure there are no specific instructions for your
device.
¡¡
Radio Care
¡ñDo not pierce or scrape the radio with any edged
instruments or hard objects.
¡ñKeep the radio far away from substances that can corrode
the electronic circuit.
¡ñDo not hold the radio by its antenna or headset cable
directly.
¡ñAttach the accessory jack cover when the radio is not in
use.
Radio Cleaning
¡ñClean up the dust and fine particles on the radio surface
and charging piece with a clean and dry lint-free cloth or a
brush regularly.
¡ñUse neutral cleanser and a non-woven fabric to clean the
keys, control knobs and front case after long-time use. Do
not use chemical preparations such as stain removers,
alcohol, sprays or oil preparations, so as to avoid surface
case damage. Make sure the radio is completely dry before
use.
Caution:
Power off the radio and remove the
battery before cleaning.
4. Protect as much as possible when in use
Even the most robust and waterproof two way radio should be
protected from the elements where possible. This doesn¡¯t
mean not using it in the rain.
All it means is that if there is an option that avoids the
rain, then it is the prudent choice.
Over the short term, this won¡¯t make much of a difference,
but you can expect a two way radio to last for years, and
throughout a long lifetime, these little steps can make a
big difference.
Both water and dust are known for their downright
persistence, and reducing the exposure to them, wherever
possible, is a great way to keep your leisure or business
two way radio radios in pristine condition.
5. Battery maintenance
We touched on battery care a little earlier, but battery
care extends, and maintenance is important at all times, not
just when storing your two way radio.
Whenever possible, don¡¯t leave them attached to a charger
after they are fully charged.
Always use the our charger or a charger that they
recommend as suitable.
It is better to not fully deplete your battery before
charging, however, at the same time, it is also not good
practice to charge them every time the battery drops to 90%.
A good aim is to look at around 30% as the optimum time to
charge your battery.
Well looked after batteries can last for up to 18 months and
still be capable of holding plenty of charge. However, we will recommend that batteries be replaced
after this period, regardless of their performance.
For specific battery guidance for your model, then it is
best to check the manual or our website.
Conclusion
A well looked after two way radio should serve you well for
years, and as you can see from the above steps, the
maintenance needed is minimal. But this little bit of
maintenance can add years of quality usage from any two-way
radio.
If you have any questions or concerns about maintaining your
radio, we are also here to help make sure you get the very
best from your two way radio.

¡¡
¡ñShould we purchase UHF, VHF,
or Digital?
UHF radios will perform well both indoors and outdoors. VHF
radios are best for outdoor use. Digital radios perform best
indoors.
¡ñWhat¡¯s the difference between VHF and UHF radios?
The difference is frequency penetration. Ultra High
Frequency (UHF) radio waves penetrate steel, concrete and
brick walls, or rugged terrain, making them ideal for
situations that need indoor ¨C to ¨C outdoor communications,
or communications between floors of a building. Very High
Frequency (VHF) radio waves travel best where there are no
obstructions, making them the right choice for outdoor
communication in areas with open land, rolling hills or
thick forests.
¡ñHow many watts do I need?
Wattage determines the strength of your radio signal with
UHF & VHF radios. The larger the jobsite, the more watts you
should purchase. Please refer to the wattage and range of
each radio before purchasing.
¡ñHow many channels do I need?
Channels are used to segregate work teams within the
jobsite. Each work group can have their own channel to
minimize disruptions in other departments. Digital radios
provide the added benefit of allowing each worker to have an
individual channel for single person-to-person communication
as well as a channel for their work group.
¡ñHow far will the radios communicate?
The radios are designed to provide complete coverage of your
jobsite. The radios are not designed to provide
communication from the jobsite but may work a mile or so
away from the site. If you require more coverage a Repeater
may be an option.
¡ñWhat is the warranty on the radios?
All our AAHHi Radios come with a replacement warranty for
one year from the date of shipment we ship and accessories
only for 6 monthes.
¡ñHow many radios can be used at one time?
You may use as many as you like. We recommend using an
additional channel for every 10 employees.
¡ñWill our two way radios communicate with other brands of
radios?
Yes, provided the other radios are programmed to the same
frequency and codes. Please contact your dealer for
assistance.
¡ñWhat does " 5 : 5 : 90 " Mean on a Battery Rating?
This is an industry standard that is called a 5, 5, 90 Duty
cycle. This means that a new, fully charged battery will
generally last XX hours if:
• Transmit time at 5%: You transmit 5% of the time
• Receiving time at 5%: Your speaker is active (you are
receiving) 5% of the time
• Standby time at 90%: Your radio sits idle (no TX or RX)
90% of the time
¡¡
¡ñWhat should I do, if the radio
is dropped into water?
Take the radio out of water as quick as possible and remove
the battery as quick as possible. Swing the water out of
radio and put the radio at the place where the ventilation
is good so that the radio be dried quickly. At last but not
least, return the radio to our authorized dealer for
maintenance as early as possible.

often shuts off automatically. Why?
Please check the battery contacts on the radio. If it is
broken or twisted, please return the radio to our authorized
dealer for maintenance.
¡ñThere is no display or something strange displayed on my
LCD? Why?
This happens because of the poor connection between the LCD
and PCB. The possible cause of this is that the radio was
dropped and not used properly. Please return the radio to
our authorized dealer for maintenance.
¡ñWhy can I hear the voices clearly from other group,
sometimes, my voice is intermittent. Why?
Please check whether the MIC is blocked by something. If so,
Please return the radio to our authorized dealer for
maintenance.
¡ñThe voice received is intermittent with rather big
noises.
Usually, when the radios are at the edge of the coverage
area or in some places where the radio signals are
interrupted or blocked, this symptom will happen. Please
kindly verify the above. If necessary, please return the
radio to our authorized dealer for maintenance.
¡ñHow to judge the performance of different model radio?
Based on the different parameter: band range, Tx power, Rx
sensitivity, and other data.
¡ñDoes the radio have radiation? How to use the radio safely
while it works?
Yes. So, when use a radio, hold the radio in a vertical
position? And keep about 2-5 centimeters distance with the
radio.
¡ñHow to use the earphone correctly?
(1)Do not draw the earphone cable hardly.
(2)Don not stick in or pull out the earphone from the jack
frequently.
¡ñHow long is the communicate distance?
The communicate distance would be disturbed by following
factors:
(1)Environment: If you use it around high buildings and
large mansions, the communication range is smaller.
(2)Weather: If you use the radio in rainy day, the radio
performance maybe poor.
(3)Power: If the power of the radio is very low, you have a
poor communicate distance.
¡ñIs long antenna better than short antenna?
No. Short antenna has convenient-design, and easy to carry.
Long antenna covers wider communication range. So the choice
all depends on the environment and personal favorite.
¡ñHow to make my radio talk to others?
Firstly, make sure to use the same technology radios (both
of two radios are the same analogy or digital radios),
secondly, set the two radios in the same frequency, thirdly,
set the same CDCSS/CTCSS/Signaling & Encryption, and at
last
they can talk each other.
¡ñWhy the programming software updates so quick, and

¡ñSolutions to FAQs when trying the radio
1.Frequency Interference: Voices from other group or other
broadcasting stations are heard on the channel. Three methods
are available:
¢Ù Change Channel
¢Ú Set CDCSS/CTCSS or DTMF
code
¢Û Lower the squelch level.
2.Short Distance: If there is difference between required
communication distance and practical distance, the
communication can be realized through adjustment of radio RF
power or squelch level. Or, a repeater is suggested added to
improve the communication.
3.Intermittent Voice: Intermittent voice is often heard in
critical distance during radio communication. Under such
condition, please adjust squelch level or cancel CDCSS/CTCSS
code to improve it.
4.Squeaking: It's normal that squeaking may be heard on the
channel when two radios is several meters near or closer.
Users can adjust the volume to improve it.
¡¡
¡ñIs a license required?
On certain models. Please visit the website of your local
communications management agency in your country or call for
consultation for more information.
¡ñAre your radios narrowband compliant?
Yes, all of our radios meet the FCC regulation of being 12.5
kHz or equivalent.
¡ñWhy do I need to license my radios with the FCC?
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is not licensing
your radios ¨C it¡¯s licensing the radio frequency used by
your radios. The airwaves are considered public property and
the FCC is mandated to regulate the use of those public
airwaves. Radio and television stations are required to be
licensed for use of broadcast airwaves, and so are all radio
operators, from business class to citizen band (CB) to ham
radio operators.
¡ñAre chargers compatible from one radio series to
another?
No. Due to different battery chemistries, sizes, and charge
times each radio requires its own charging system.
